Machu Picchus Highlights

The Machu Picchu Historical Reserve is located between the highland Andes and the rainforest (roughly 70 miles from Cusco) and sits at 2,450 meters (8,038 feet) above sea level. Machu Picchu is a magical place that has long fascinated its visitors because of its vast archaeological remains, unique flora and fauna and exuberant cloud forest. The most remarkable part of the area is the historical reserve of Machu Picchu, which is one of the world’s most breathtaking and beautiful destinations.

Machu Picchus Historical Reserve can be accessed either by foot (via one of the Incan Treks or by a short bus trip from the charming village of Aguas Calientes.

From Aguas Calientes buses depart every 30-40 minutes, starting at 5:30 in the morning until 1:30 in the afternoon.   Return buses depart Machu Picchus ruins every day from 10:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. The bus rides cost roughly $12 US Dollars per person.

Machu Picchu’s exuberant natural beauty is characteristic of the Andean Cloud Forest. Often you’ll see soft fluffy clouds of fog clinging to the mountain peaks and giving it a quite mystical and otherworldly experience. The landscape near the ruins is covered in gorgeous colorful flowers, vibrant orchids, exotic bromeliads, hundreds of species of endemic birds and surrounded by the fluttering of many butterflies. The majestic view and lush backdrop of the ruins make a trip to this lost citadel of the Incans an unforgettable place to visit  Once you are within the ruins, you will also see Wiñay Wayna (the Incan temple of the Sun) and Inti Punku, (the Incan temple of the moon).

The small charming village of Aguas Calientes(otherwise know as Machu Picchu Pueblo) is nestled deep in a valley surrounded by the towering Andes peaks of Wayna Picchu, Machu Picchu, and the Putukusi Mountains.  This is also the place where the buses and trains arrive for people wanting to visit the famous ruins.  This small town also has gorgeous natural hot springs locally made handicrafts, a museum, a butterfly sanctuary and most typical tourist services.
